Intelligent Medical Objects announces expansion of
“consumer-friendly” terms in their Clinical Interface Terminology products
NORTHBROOK, IL (August 29th, 2009) – Intelligent Medical Objects (IMO®) announces the general availability of their next major release of consumer extensions to their market-leading line of Clinical Interface Terminology products including IMO’s Problem IT. Problem IT is a clinical diagnosis and problem terminology that contains over 170,000 user-friendly terms for clinicians, coders, and patients. Used within the Electronic Health Record (EHR), Problem IT allows clinicians to use language that makes sense to them, while retaining, behind the scenes, interoperability standards such as ICD-9-CM and SNOMED CT.
Since the inception of the Problem IT offering, IMO has provided consumer-friendly terms and translations which help patient understand their health more clearly. In its newest release, IMO now maps all clinician-friendly interface terms to a consumer-friendly counterpart. IMO takes a pragmatic, commonsense approach to creating consumer-friendly terms. Some examples include the consumer friendly term “athlete’s foot” for the clinician term “tinea pedis” and “fibroid” for “uterine leiomyoma.”
“IMO’s mission for interface terminology is to capture and preserve the clinician’s intent, while improving the accuracy of billing and the exchange of health information. We are excited to enhance Problem IT’s ability to help consumers interpret and understand their health information,” says Dr. Frank Naeymi-Rad, IMO CEO.
Consumer-friendly terms are an essential feature in many patient-focused health information applications, such as patient health records, patient portals to disease information, physician search engines, and educational materials and instructions. Research shows that patient satisfaction and outcomes such as treatment adherence, behavioral change, and follow-up improve when patients understand the information communicated by the clinicians.
